What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are also called botulinum toxin. Wrinkles occur over time because of where muscles insert into the skin. Eventually over time consistent contraction of these muscles can cause wrinkles to occur. In small amounts botulinum toxin acts to temporarily reduce muscle activity and thus reduce wrinkles and creases resulting from muscle motion. Botox and Dysport are very safe and are used in millions of patients. Botox and Dysport can be targeted toward multiple areas in the face. It is used often to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles, periorbital wrinkles or crow's feet, provide a minimal brow lift, treat bands in the neck, and downturning of the corners of the mouth.

While anesthesia is not typically required for Botox and Dysport injections, we often utilize anesthetic cream to limit any potential discomfort from Botox and Dysport injections. Botox and Dysport will take up to about a week to take effect. We customize the amount of Botox or Dysport we use in each patient, as each patient will require differing amounts to be effective. Generally Botox or Dysport will last for 3-4 months as it gradually wears off. If you do not have wrinkles currently, Botox and Dysport can help prevent them from ever forming. Patient with severe, deep wrinkles may not be helped significantly by Botox and Dysport. Other treatment modalities can be utilized in these circumstances.

What is the recovery time? Everyone heals differently but there is minimal swelling with injection and bruising is uncommon. Most people can return to normal activities the same day or next day without any sign of swelling or bruising.
